Gesturing in the Air: Supporting Full Mobility in Remote Collaboration on Physical Tasks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many collaborative situations require that a remote helper guides a local worker in performing manipulations of physical objects in the real world (physical tasks). Existing systems supporting such collaboration often confine collaborators in fixed desktop settings. Therefore they have limited usefulness in situations in which collaborators are mobile and/or desktop settings are not feasible. In this paper, we present HandsInAir, a wearable system for remote guidance. This system is designed to support mobility of the collaborators and provide easy access to remote expertise. HandsInAir draws on the richness of hand gestures for remote guiding and implements a novel approach that supports unmediated remote gestures and allows the helper to perform natural gestures by hands without the need of a physical support. We review related work, describe technical implementation, and present a usability study demonstrating the usefulness and usability of HandsInAir.

Supporting hand gestures in mobile remote collaboration: a usability evaluation
Rapid advances in networking and hardware have made it possible for remotely located individuals to perform physical tasks together. Although a range of systems have been developed for remote collaboration, how to support the richness of hand gestures for an expert guiding a mobile worker located in a non-traditional-desktop environment has not been fully explored. HandsOnVideo is a system deve...

Remote gesturing visualization contributes to the efficiency of distant collaboration tasks because it enables coordination among participant's action and talk. This paper presents computer vision improvements of VideoArms, a collaborative system proposed by Tang et al. coupling a sensitive board with a video capture of participant's gesture. The main contributions address robustness, constrain...
متن کاملDeveloping Mobile Remote Collaboration Systems for Industrial Use: Some Design Challenges
Many real-world collaboration scenarios involve a helper remotely guiding a worker performing a task requiring the manipulation of physical objects/devices. Systems currently available for remote guiding have limitations for industrial use, particularly in terms of supporting the mobile aspect of work. To meet these needs and as part of our work for the mining industry, we have developed two sy...
متن کاملCrowdsourcing in the Field: A Case Study Using Local Crowds for Event Reporting
While crowd work typically involves tasks that performed at any time and anywhere, some tasks inherently require the physical presence of workers at a specific time and location. This paper presents a case study of a hybrid crowdsourcing process that involves the collaborative production of event reports using a combination of local and remote workers. The process extends human computation into...
متن کاملDesign and Construction of an Aerosol Particle Classification System Based on Electrical Mobility
Introduction: The application of particles’ electrical mobility in the electric field has always been an important concern, as the functional basis of a number of particle measuring and classification instrumentations. The objective of this study was to design and construct an aerosol particles classification system using electrical mobility feature in laboratory scale. Methodology: This labo...
